Three benches

Games your display
has to play.

Ordinary white is not the top of the scale. Given headroom, a pixel can be encoded as a light rather than a lit surface. That difference is something you can be tested on, write a message in, and measure.

Overwhite A composer, not a game. Type a short message and it comes out as a Rec.2100 PQ plate: readable on a screen with headroom, blank white without one.

What is happening

Every board is a lossless PNG carrying a real Rec.2100 PQ profile, built in your browser and never uploaded. The profile does the work: it tells a colour-managed renderer that a code value means an absolute luminance. No CSS glow, no animation, no gain map.

The honest limits

Most visitors have no headroom to spend. Firefox renders no HDR still images at all, and many displays report none. Those browsers compress the extra light into the top of the ordinary range rather than discarding it, so the games stay playable but become a hunt through near-identical whites. Nothing here is hidden, private or secure.

This page makes light.

On a display with headroom, small parts of these boards will be brighter than anything else on your screen. That is the point of the games, and worth knowing first.

Small and still.Above-white content is capped at 1% of your viewport. Nothing on a play surface animates.

Slow and bounded. The one brightness control is limited in code to one change every 1.6 seconds, against the 3 Hz limit in WCAG 2.3.1. Emitters stop at 650 nits.

Reversible.Reduce intensity and Flatten HDR sit in the header on every screen. Flatten is never gated behind a game.

Photosensitive epilepsy affects roughly 1 in 4,000 people. No automated checker can verify content like this: WCAG's flash model normalises 1.0 to CSS white and cannot express brighter-than-white at all. The limits above are enforced in code rather than certified by a tool. If bright light bothers you, use Flatten HDR. The games still work.
